Recess-ion:

Almost everyday in newspapers and news channels we come across news covering the present times of global economic recession; it's dire effects on corporate and private sectors and much much more of adverse ones on the common man who went to work one fine day as usual only to witness being victims of the same on the very next.

Thinking of it, is it not something we are already familiar with?
"Survival of the fittest/only the fittest will prevail" - Darwinism.

Just like present, those times must have been equally tough or even tougher. You would say; that was then, this is now and it has never been so precarious. True but while so, lets look around in the market today; do we not see only the real good brands surviving the present recession storm? These and many others such still-standing institutions or personalities are presenting us with a live recession-survival-tips-kit, to re-learn from. Our outside influences, in other words. Whilst our inside carry the 'will and wit' to keep us going.

So I say back, to these news headlines, "what's the big deal?"
Let not the anxiety and fear hinder our will while we are struggle and evolve be fit once again.
While I leave you with these thoughts, here are some powerful lines by the thinkers and writers ( and doer-s!) of our times.

"Creation is a better means of self expression than possession; it is through creating, not possessing, that life is revealed." - Voda D. Scudder, The life of the Spirit in the Modern English Poets.

"What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal; a freely chosen task. " - Viktor E Franki, Holocaust survior' author of Man's Search for Meaning.

"Trouble sharpens the vision" - P G Wodehouse

"Changes in perception will dramatically effect emotions and behaviour. The use of 'logic' will not have these effects." - Edward de Bono

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. " - George Berbard Shaw, Maxims for revolutionists.

"The man dwelling on sense-objects develops attachment for them; from attachment sprins up desire, and from desire(unfulfilled) ensues anger. From anger arises infatuation' from infatuation, confusion of memory; from confusion of memory, loss of reason; and with loss of reason one goes to complete nowhere. But a self controlled man, while enjoying the various sense-objects through his senses, which are disciplined and free from like and dislikes, attains placidity of mind. With placidity of mind, intellect of a tranquil mind one attains composure (with the one/could be what we aim for). " - Bhagavadgita, Sri Krishna.

So it's time to gear up our gadgets!
Good luck to all of us....

Self-religion

"Mirror mirror on the wall, which is the righteous religion of all?!?"

Righteous religion? Does it mean what a person/a group thinks is right? But again its all relative. A truth/right for a person might not be the truth/right for another but as far as we have a self religion, collectively we shall continue making this world a humane place.

Self religion could be put as 'the goodness within each one of us'. Something we often experience when put in a situation to choose right from wrong, from moral to immoral.
It allows us to keep ourselves motivated and directed by verification and knowledge. Not by beliefs.
Self religion is infact the oldest and most eternal religion we have; a religion of individual freedom. It is a willingness and an ability to observe oneself and to correct one's own faults.

So how about a date with oneself once in a while!

Mindfulness

If this elephant of mind is bound on all sides by the cord of mindfulness,
All fear disappears and complete happiness comes.

All enemies: all the tigers, lions, elephants, bears, serpents [of our emotions];
And all the keepers of hell; the demons and the horrors,
All of these are bound by the mastery of your mind,
And by the taming of that one mind, all are subdued,
Because from the mind are derived all fears and immeasurable sorrows.

-8th century Buddhist master Shantideva .

SADA by Narsi Mehta

Here's a beautiful poetry by Narsi Mehta ( 1440-80), known as father of Gujarati poetry. He sadas' (devotional songs for Hindu deity Lord Krishna) from 17th century and those by others during the same time become part of the devotional movement in Hinduism liberating it from the obstinate priesthood in dominance then.

'Vaishanav Janato', is one of the many a sadas or Gujarati poetry written and composed by Narsi Mehta which went and become one of the favorite devotional & spiritually enlightening songs. This song has inspired many including Mahatma Gandhi.

'Vaishanav Janato' / lyrics
below:
Vishnav janto tene reh kahiye jeh
Peed paraayi jaane reh
Par-dukheh upkaar kareh toyeh
Maan abhimaan na aaneh reh
Vishnav .....

Sakal lok mai sahuneh vandeh
Nindaah nah kareh tenni reh
Vaach kaach maan nischal raakheh
Dhan dhan jannani tenni reh
Vishnav .....

English translation of the above lines...

He is a God's man ( of woman of course!)

Who understands the pain of others,

Who does good to others, esp. to those once who are in misery,

And doing so does not let pride enter his mind.

In the entire world respects everyone/sees good in everyone,

Who does not have ill feelings/words for any one,

Keeps his/her speech genuine and pure,

The all the goodness/happiness/richness comes to him/her.

. . . .

This song still touches me whenever I hum or hear it anywhere. It reminds me of the humanity and purity I pray to embrace everyday.

Mango Mousse

She decides to make him something from mango. ‘He would love it!’ she said to herself. He had always liked her cooking. He never said so but she knew it.

Thinking of the elation when he tastes her special recipe keeps her busy while she meticulously prepares the dish with all the best ingredients in stock. Excitement twinkling in her eyes in intervals.

Mango Mousse
Ripe mangoes, weighing about 4 pounds
1/2 cup lime juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 envelope (tablespoon) unflavored gelatin
2 egg whites
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup heavy cream

Peel the mangoes, cut the flesh off the seeds, and puree in an electric blender with the lime juice, being careful not to over -blend. There will be 5 cups of puree. Stir in the sugar. Dissolve the gelatin in 1/4 cup hot water, cool, and stir into the mango puree. Beat the egg whites with the salt until they stand in peaks. Whip the cram until it is stiff. Fold the cream into the egg whites, then fold this mixture gently into the mango puree. Pour into a large serving dish, or into individual dishes, and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours, or until set.

They sit next to each other and the candle-light flickers thousands of those similar-yet-untold-stories in their eyes. She looks at him taking a scoop of the 'mango mousse' and anticipates almost like a child who awaits even the most routine with a new hope, every time.

He smiles back.

“Hmmm. That is it or you have something more for me, inside?” saying so, he finishes his mango mousse along with the last of the chocolate flakes that she had earlier sprinkled ‘for that extra bit’ and thoughtfully smiled at. He looks up at her from above the empty plate wondering for her reply.

Her tender profile struggles for some more light from the candle to feel defined once again. She stays stock-still in front of the empty plate for a moment in time.

Then, stands up and walks away.... towards light.

'Soul Secret' in brief:

Know your SOUL (Atma) as riding in a chariot,
The BODY as the chariot,
Know thou the INTELLECT (Buddhi) as a chariot-driver,
And the MIND (manas) as the rein.

The SENSES (Indriya), they say, are the horses,
The OBJECTS OF SENSE, what they range over,
The SELF combined with SENSES and MIND…
Wise-men call it the ENJOY-ER ( Bhoktri).

Higher than the SENSES are the OBJECTS OF SENSE,
Higher than the OBJECTS OF SENSES is the MIND (Manas),
And higher than MIND is INTELLECT (Buddhi),
Higher than INTELLECT is the SELF (Atma).

-- Katha Upanishad
